Try a triathlon in 2016: New sporting event for Brighton & Hove

26 January 2016 | new.brighton-hove.gov.uk/

Registration is now open for a new triathlon taking place in September 2016. The event has a maximum of 1,500 places with categories for elite athletes, experienced, intermediate and new participants. The triathlon was given the go ahead by councillors at the Economic Development and Culture Committee last June and is supported by Brighton & Hove City Council.

The first Brighton & Hove Triathlon will take place on Sunday 11 September and is based mainly on Hove Lawns. A sea swim will be followed by cycling along nearby closed roads before the final run stage takes place on Hove Promenade and Lawns with the city’s iconic views as a backdrop.

Triathlons have been boosted in popularity in recent years by the success of British athletes on the international stage, including the 2012 Olympics. There are three race distances available, including the standard distance; 1500m swim followed by a 40km cycle and ending with a 10km run and the smallest distance, the Super Sprint 400m swim, 5km cycle and 2.5km run. As we enter another Olympic year, this sport is set to gain more coverage and again rise in popularity. The event has already received international entrants from across Europe including Germany, Denmark and France.

Cllr Alan Robins, Deputy Chair of Economic Development and Culture Committee, said: “The Brighton and Hove Triathlon is an excellent new event for the city and will attract many people to come along to participate or watch the sporting activity. Brighton & Hove has a strong reputation for high profile sporting fixtures and this is a welcome addition to the events calendar for 2016.”

In addition, a big outdoor Sport and Fitness show will run over both days of the triathlon weekend. The outdoor show held on Hove lawns will represent innovative health and fitness including nutrition, sports technology, a shopping village and a main stage hosting fitness classes and demonstrations. One of the main features of The Sport and Fitness Show will be several ‘Have a go’ areas creating an interactive playground for children and adults alike to sample new sports and receive coaching from industry experts.

Sports and Fitness show organiser, Lisa Clayton states, “The Sport and Fitness Show is an exciting new concept. We will be showcasing a vast array of different sports, health brands, new technologies and fitness trends all gathered together in one place. We have designed the show to inspire and capture the imagination of thousands of active families and individuals of all levels on Hove Lawns”.

Have fun in the coolest city In Britain

Brighton is one of the UKs most active, health conscious towns. Less than an hour away from London, its renowned the world over for its vibrancy, alternative lifestyle and sheer va va voom. With over 8 million visitors a year, what other place in the UK can boast its own arts festival, bike ride, marathon, and triathlon? Not forgetting its amazing choice of bars, restaurants and shopping.

When you’ve enjoyed the Sport and Fitness Show to the max, don’t forget to have a wander around our dynamic city. Who knows what you might find!

~~~
FYI: I escaped to Brighton from my somewhat overly intense existence in New York City to attend this show. My partner and I had just invested in a small franchise offering fitness equipment and coaching and were looking for ideas. We were enjoying ourselves while networking and getting some really promising leads. Then I get a call from my sister, telling me that it was probably time that we look for an assisted living facility for our elderly mother. This was an issue we had been discussing for some time. Apparently our mother had finally decided that her life would be easier if she were living in a home for seniors rather than on her own. It turned out that our mother's best friend was moving into the Hart Heritage Estates, a residential care facility in Bel Air Maryland, not far from where my sister lives. My mother wanted us to look into Hart Heritage Estates for her as well. My sister in her email gave me the link to the site rather cryptically with a "here". Initially I panicked, but after perusing the Hart Heritage Estates website, I relaxed and thought that if they had space for our mother it could be great. I told my sister I really liked the Forest Hill location with its 6.5 acres of park-like grounds. She should go and check out the residence in person with our mother and when I arrived back in the states from the Sport and Fitness Show, I would drive done to discuss further. Update: My fitness business is taking off and my mother is happily ensconced at Hart Heritage Estates.
2015 - 2016 News
May 25, 2016 Live Love Hoop: Hula for your health! Live Love Hoop: Hula for your health!
I’m Iris and I work at The Sport and Fitness Show as an Event Executive. Untitled design (6) I’m always looking for fun ways to keep active, and in Brighton there’s no shortage of quirky classes. So I dropped into one of Live Love Hoop’s beginner sessions held at Brighton and Hove High School with Jo Mondy…
What to expect
Expect to hula hoop! Don’t worry if you can’t hoop or haven’t hula’d for a long time, Jo is a fantastic teacher and gives excellent and personalised tips on the technique behind the hoop. Not only do you hoop around the waist, I learnt how to hoop on hands and wrists as well as how to ‘figure of eight’ the hoop around me.
What to wear
Wear non-restrictive clothes that allow you to move. I wore leggings and a top, which worked absolutely fine. Shoes are optional, I felt more comfortable in my socks but trainers can also be worn.
What to take with you
All you need is a bottle of water and a can-do attitude! Jo supplies all of the hoops for the session, but you can also buy your very own hoop if you want to practise outside of the class.
What will I work on?
Hula hooping on the waist will really work your abdominal muscles and improve your core strength. Hand and wrist hooping gives your arms a good workout as well!
Fun factor
Who doesn’t love a good old hula hoop session?! It’s a great way of having a laugh and being a bit silly while being active, and everyone in the class was so friendly and ready to give advice to newbies. It was a great atmosphere with everyone spurring each other on and congratulating everyone on their efforts – very beginner friendly!
Final thoughts
I would recommend everyone to give Live Love Hoop a try – it’s fun,  interactive, and super friendly. Not only can you attend the sessions, but a Facebook group set up by Jo also allows everyone from the class to link up together and attend Hula Jams across Brighton and Hove.
May 20, 2016 The Sport and Fitness Show offers a magical twist on sport The Sport and Fitness Show offers a magical twist on sport
Calling all muggles! Organisers of The Sport and Fitness Show invite you to magical and wonderful experience. Quidditch, best known for its fictional background within J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter saga, will appear as part of event on 10-11th September on Hove Lawns, Brighton and Hove. The unique sporting experience will be hosted by national governing body, QuidditchUK and will be free for public to join in.
Quidditch stands by itself as a thriving sport and is unique in its combination of tactical play, physicality, and gender inclusivity. Quidditch is a co-ed contact sport with a unique mix of elements from rugby, dodgeball, wrestling, flag football, and other sports.
A Quidditch team is made up of seven athletes who play with brooms between their legs at all times. While the game can appear chaotic to the casual observer, once familiar with the basic rules, Quidditch is an exciting sport to watch and even more exciting to play. And the snitch? Well, the snitch is a tennis ball in a yellow sock tucked into the back of the snitch runner’s shorts, and the snitch runner has to prevent the seekers from getting the snitch. It’s not as bizarre as it sounds…
Mel Piper, President of Quidditch UK says, “We at QuidditchUK are incredibly excited to be part of the Sport and Fitness Show in Brighton. This is a great chance to showcase what the sport is all about. It will be wonderful to get as many people to have a go as possible, young or old, and show that this sport is more than merely something based on fiction.”
Josie Pether, Event Manager of The Sport and Fitness Show, says “Quidditch captures the excitement of children and the gusto of adults. We hope muggle and wizarding enthusiasts alike will enjoy the ‘Have a Go’ sessions over the weekend”.
The Sport and Fitness Show will also be home to a variety of Have a Go sport activity such as Zumba Fitness, football coaching, Segways with Go Ape, Les Mills classes, Burlexercise, Ballet Fit and much more…
